Anabolic Steroids androgens are man-made substances related to male sex hormones. “Anabolizzanti” refers to muscle-building, and “androgenic” refers to increased masculine characteristics. “Steroids” refers to a class of drugs. These drugs are available legally only by prescription, to treat conditions that occur when the body produces abnormally low amounts of testosterone, such as delayed puberty and some types of impotence. They are also prescribed to treat body wasting in patients with AIDS and other diseases that involve a loss of lean muscle mass. Abuse of anabolic steroids, however, can lead to serious health problems, some irreversible. Today, athletes and others abuse anabolic steroids to enhance performance and to improve physical appearance. The anabolic steroids are taken orally or injected, usually in cycles of weeks or months (called “cycling”), rather than continuously. Cycling involves multiple doses of steroids over a specific period of time, stopping for a period, and starting again. In addition, users often combine several types of steroids to maximize their effectiveness while minimizing negative effects (referred to as “stack”). Health hazards The main side effects from abusing anabolic steroids can include cancer and liver cancer, jaundice (yellowing of the skin, tissues and body fluids), fluid retention, high blood pressure, increases in LDL (bad cholesterol) and reduces the HDL (good cholesterol). Other side effects include kidney tumors, severe acne, and trembling. In addition, there are some gender-specific side effects: • For men - shrinkage of the testicles, reduced sperm count, infertility, baldness, breast development, increased risk of prostate cancer. • For women - growth of facial hair, male-pattern baldness, modifications or termination of the menstrual cycle, enlargement of the clitoris, deepened voice. • For adolescents - growth stopped prematurely through premature skeletal maturation and accelerated puberty changes. This means that young people in danger of running out for the rest of their lives, whether anabolic steroids before taking the typical adolescent growth spurt. In addition, people who inject anabolic steroids run the added risk of contracting or transmitting HIV / AIDS or hepatitis, which causes serious liver damage. Scientific research also shows that aggression and other psychiatric side effects may result from abuse of anabolic steroids. Many users report feeling good about themselves while anabolic steroids, but researchers report that extreme fluctuations also can occur, including manic-like symptoms leading to violence. Depression often is seen when the drugs are stopped and may contribute to dependence on anabolic steroids. Researchers report also that users may suffer from paranoid jealousy, extreme irritability, delusions, and reduced judgement arising from feelings of invincibility.1 The research also indicates that some users may turn to other drugs to alleviate some of the negative effects of anabolic steroids. For example, a study of 227 men admitted in 1999 to a private treatment center for heroin dependence or other opioids 39516 percent had found that abused anabolic steroids before groped any other illicit drug. Of these 39516 per cent, 86 per cent first opiate used to combat insomnia and irritability resulting from anabolic steroids.2 Measure of Use Monitoring the Future (MTF) Survey * A MTF annually assesses drug use among the Nation’s 8th, 10 and 12 grade students. The use of steroids among all three grades to assess remained unchanged from 2005 to 2006 for both boys and girls, although significant reductions were detected from 2001 for the duration ** use. Last years has been reported to use 0.9 percent of 8th-graders, 39479 percent of 10th-graders, and 39661 percent of 12-graders in 2006. Perception of the risk of use of steroids, which are collected only for the elderly, has increased significantly, from 56.8 percent in 2005 to 60.2 percent in 2006.
